Why BitMEX Is Closing
BitMEX is a cryptocurrency trading platform launched in 2014 and operated by HDR Global Trading Limited. The exchange became widely known for crypto derivatives and for its role in popularising perpetual swap contracts.
On 23 July 2026, BitMEX announced that its board had decided to close the exchange following a strategic review of the business and the wider cryptocurrency industry.
New account registrations were stopped immediately. BitMEX therefore should no longer be presented as an exchange for new customers.
BitMEX Closure Timeline
Registrations Closed
BitMEX stopped creating new accounts. Existing customers retain access to the functions available during the wind-down period.
Reduce-Only Restrictions
From 04:00 UTC, users will no longer be able to open new positions or increase existing ones. Positions can only be reduced.
Exchange Services End
At 04:00 UTC, exchange services will stop. Any positions still open at the closure time will be force-closed.
Between 26 August and the final closure, BitMEX may force-close positions to support an orderly market wind-down. Contracts with limited liquidity may also be settled early.
What Will Happen After the Closure
Functions Expected to Remain Available
- logging into an existing account;
- viewing the wallet balance;
- reviewing transaction history;
- submitting withdrawal requests;
- contacting customer support.
Functions That Will End
- registration of new accounts;
- opening new trading positions;
- increasing existing positions;
- trading after the closure time;
- other BitMEX exchange services.
According to the official announcement, BitMEX will continue holding the assets of customers who have not withdrawn before the closure time. Those remaining balances will be subject to an account fee.
Withdrawals and Possible Delays
BitMEX recommends closing positions and withdrawing assets as soon as practical rather than waiting until the final day.
The company has introduced additional review procedures for withdrawal requests. During periods of higher demand, processing may take longer because of request queues, network restrictions and blockchain confirmation times.
Account Fee on Assets Left After Closure
BitMEX has announced an account fee for KYC-verified customers who fail to withdraw their assets by 23 September 2026 at 04:00 UTC.
Fee Amount
The fee is the equivalent of USD 50 or 1% per year of the remaining account balance, whichever amount is greater.
How It Is Charged
The fee will be calculated and charged monthly. BitMEX also reserved the right to increase it later, subject to advance notice.
According to BitMEX, leaving assets on the platform after the closure time means accepting the announced account fee.
Open Positions and Early Contract Settlement
BitMEX says the exchange will continue to operate normally until the risk restrictions take effect on 26 August 2026. After that point, positions can only be reduced.
BitMEX may close open positions at its discretion to support an orderly market wind-down. All positions still open at 23 September 2026 at 04:00 UTC will be closed immediately.
A force-closed position may be executed at a price different from the customer’s expectation. BitMEX states that it accepts no responsibility for trading losses resulting from a customer’s inability to close a position before the closure time.
BMEX, Security and Proof of Reserves
BMEX Tokens
BitMEX stated that all BMEX tokens previously staked on the platform were automatically unstaked and made available in holder accounts.
Security Statements
In the closure announcement, BitMEX states that no customer funds were lost to hacks during the exchange’s operating history. This is a statement made by the company itself.
BitMEX also publishes a Proof of Reserves and Liabilities system. The company states that its assets exceed customer liabilities.
Proof of Reserves and Liabilities improves transparency, but it is not government protection, deposit insurance or a guarantee that every withdrawal will be processed immediately.
