Although Ripple is often seen as an alternative to Swift, this time the international financial messaging system decided to test a different solution. According to a report published on Friday, Swift is exploring the possibility of migrating its messaging infrastructure to Ethereum Layer-2 Linea.

“The project will take several months but could become a significant technological step for global interbank settlements,” said an anonymous source.

The company, which serves more than 11,500 banks and financial institutions, has already experimented with blockchain technology in the past. In 2025, Swift plans to launch pilot tests of digital asset and currency transactions across its network.

Back in August 2023, Swift released the results of a series of experiments on transferring tokenized assets across multiple public and private blockchains.

“The findings revealed the potential to eliminate significant barriers that slow down the growth of tokenized asset markets and create the conditions for global scalability,” the company noted at the time.

According to The Big Whale, Linea was chosen because of its focus on privacy and advanced cryptographic proofs — a key factor for banks balancing innovation with regulatory requirements.

Linea is an EVM-compatible blockchain developed by Consensys. It uses ZK-Rollup technology for scaling, has been operational since July 2023, and launched its native token only this month.
