In a new post on X, Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin criticized the reckless race toward Artificial General Intelligence (AGI). Instead of competing to build faster and bigger systems, he argues that AI development should be steered in a direction that protects human freedom, distributes power more evenly, and minimizes both extreme AI-related risks and everyday security vulnerabilities.
Buterin outlines a vision in which Ethereum plays an important—though not exclusive—role as infrastructure for AI. This includes tools that allow people to interact with AI models more privately, reducing reliance on centralized providers.
Examples include running models locally, making anonymous payments for AI services, and using cryptography to verify the behavior of AI systems.
He also sees Ethereum as a foundation for economic coordination between AI systems. This would enable bots to pay other bots, post collateral, build reputation, and resolve disputes without depending on a single company.

Combined with AI tools that help humans evaluate decisions and outcomes, such systems could make long-discussed ideas like decentralized governance practically viable, according to Buterin.
“For me, the essence of Ethereum—and my view on how our civilization should approach AGI—is about choosing a positive direction rather than embracing blind acceleration at any cost,” Buterin wrote on X.
