Investigators allege the suspect maintained contact with an Iranian handler for several months, completing tasks that included photographing homes of Israeli officials, military installations, and painting political graffiti—all at the direction of Iranian intelligence.
Law enforcement reportedly seized computers and other digital devices believed to have been used for communication with Iranian operatives. Authorities claim the suspect received thousands of dollars in cryptoassets as compensation for his activities.
The Tel Aviv District Court ordered the suspect to remain in custody at least until June 26, 2025, as the investigation continues. In a joint statement, the police and Shin Bet urged the public to exercise caution, warning that Iranian intelligence and affiliated terrorist groups actively recruit Israelis via social networks.
“Those engaged in espionage against the State of Israel will be prosecuted to the fullest extent,” the agencies emphasized, urging citizens to report any suspicious contact from foreigners immediately.
This incident comes amid heightened cyber tensions between the two countries. Last week, a pro-Israeli hacker group claimed to have breached Iranian crypto exchange Nobitex, draining roughly $90 million in crypto and accusing the platform of ties to Iranian intelligence. In response, Iran’s central bank imposed new operating hours restrictions on local crypto exchanges.
