The initiative aims to build a cadre of experts who will accelerate the transformation of the armed forces into a data-driven organization.
Specialists in this field will work on improving operational effectiveness across several key areas, including:
-
speeding up decision-making cycles;
-
increasing the accuracy of intelligence and targeting;
-
optimizing logistics;
-
integrating combat robotic systems.
All active-duty officers will be eligible to apply for a transfer, though priority will be given to candidates with relevant education or professional experience.
Selected officers will undergo advanced training equivalent to a master’s degree and gain hands-on experience with operational AI-based systems. The full retraining process is expected to be completed by the end of 2026.
The decision follows the Pentagon’s launch of the GenAI.mil platform in early December, built on Google’s Gemini model. The platform is designed for the lawful and secure use of generative AI in defense-related tasks.
The creation of GenAI.mil is part of a plan unveiled in July by the administration of U.S. President Donald Trump, which instructs federal agencies to accelerate the adoption of advanced AI systems.
It is worth noting that in 2024, around 200 employees of Google’s AI division, DeepMind, voiced concerns over the company’s involvement in military initiatives.
